Tarzan Ball is a tricky hook-and-pull physics game

tarzanball
So, you're a ball. A Tarzan Ball, to be precise. You've earned the nickname thanks to your astonishing ability to shoot out a lengthy 'vine' (I hope it's a vine) at objects, and then pull yourself towards those objects.

That's a handy ability to have, especially since you've got no legs, no arms, and no other means of transportation. In Tarzan Ball, the rope is everything. But you don't just swing around the screen aimlessly - that wouldn't be much of a game now, would it?

Instead, your goal in life is to collect "targets". Each level has one of these "targets" hidden away somewhere on the screen, usually behind some kind of barrier. Once you navigate close enough to the target, you can shoot your rope at it and just reel it in. That's when you pass the level.

You can't die in this game, but it can still be very frustrating. It's actually one of the tougher games I've posted recently. Still, if you enjoy physics games, this one is quite nicely made.

[This is actually the sequel to IQ Ball, which we covered last year! -Ed]

iPhone, iPad getting cryptographic modules to better target government and enterprise?

iPhone, iPad getting Cryptographic modules to better target government and enterprise? TiPb is hearing that Apple might just be set to take on government and enterprise a little bit more aggressively by adding FIPS 140-2 Cryptographic Modules to iPhone, iPad, and the Mac. The Federal Information Processing Standard, publication 140-2 is a US government security standard for certifying both hardware and software security modules. According to our [...]

This Week's Best Android Apps [Apps]

Thrutu: When you're on a phone call, Thrutu puts a sliding drawer on top of your dialer to give you easy access to send pictures, contact info, location, etc. to the person you're talking to. It's quick and painless-just think about how many times you've tried to track down a phone number or explained directions on the phone, none of those situations would be as easy as just directly sending what you need. Only problems right now is that it doesn't work with CDMA Android phones (no simultaneous data and voice!) and both users need Thrutu. Free.

iDisplay for Android review: turn your smartphone or tablet into a 2nd or 3rd desktop display

iDisplay screen extending for Android
When we first heard about iDisplay, there was something about it that piqued our curiosity. It extends your desktop onto another screen -- your Android or iOS device, to be exact -- and while that sounds cool, its actual usefulness isn't immediately apparent.

All you have to do is install the app on your Android device (2.1 or newer), run the server program on your Windows or Mac PC, and then connect from your phone. Voila! An extended desktop.

In theory, it sounds as easy as pie -- and we'd be lying if we said the concept of extending your screen to your mobile device didn't appeal to our the inner nerd -- but in practice, iDisplay for Android is an untamed beast that doesn't really do what it's meant to do.

No One Was Hurt in This Google Maps Plane Crash [Video]

Follow this link to a Google Maps shot of Alameda, California, and you'll see an arresting site: a downed commercial aircraft spewing debris, with its wings snapped into pieces and its hull cut cleanly in half. It looks like a crash perfect enough for a TV show. And in fact that's just what it was. More »

N64oid brings Nintendo 64 emulation to Android devices

There's not exactly a shortage of video game emulators for Android devices, but there has been one notable, 64-bit exception. That's finally been rectified with the just-released N64oid application, however, which finally brings emulation of Nintendo 64 games to the platform -- and, like the other emulators from developer Yongzh, it's conveniently available right in the Android Market (for $5.99). As you might expect, there are a few glitches and hiccups to be found even on high-end phones like the Nexus S, but it does seem to run remarkably well for an initial release and, as Download Squad points out, you can also use a separate, freely-available app to add some Wiimote controls to the proceedings. Also, it means you can play Goldeneye on your phone. Video after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
