Creepy app uses Twitter and Flickr data to track anyone on a map

locate anyone twitter flickr map
When you post a photo online -- especially from a phone with a built-in camera -- you're likely sharing more than the picture itself. The same is true for updates you post on Twitter. Location data is commonly included, and crafty types can do all kinds of creepy things with that information.

A good example of what's possible is Creepy, a desktop app which lets you track a Flickr or Twitter user's position on a map. Just pop in a Twitter or Flickr ID, and if the person has posted any geocoded data Creepy will pin the corresponding locations on a map. Satellite, street, and hybrid maps from Google and Virtual Earth are available, as are OpenAerialMap and OpenStreetMap.

Above, you can see where @scobleizer has been puttering around. Pop in anyone you want and then wait patiently -- Creepy analyzes quite a bit of data, so it can take a while for your results to appear. The mapping magic works as long as the user you search for has enabled geolocation features -- and that likely includes the vast majority of Twitter and Flickr users using a mobile app.

Creepy is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and the application's source code is also downloadable.

Trucks Flying Out of the Back of an Airplane Are Just as Awesome as They Sound [Video]

Sometimes, when you need a truck somewhere, you drive it there. Sometimes, you parachute it out of the back of an airplane. We're not exactly sure what the story is here—probably a military exercise—but the speed with which those trucks launch out of the plane is pretty spectacular. Make sure your toe doesn't get caught. Microsoft kicks off effort to rid the world of Internet Explorer 6

"Friends don't let friends use Internet Explorer 6." A quote from any random web developer over the past ten years? Nope, that's from Microsoft itself, and it's featured on the Internet Explorer 6 Countdown site that the company just launched today. As you can see above, the site also includes statistics on IE6 use around the world (China is apparently the biggest offender by a wide margin), as well as information about how you can "join the cause" and educate others about the perils of using such a horrible, outdated web browser.

Opera is the first non-Safari browser and BitTorrent client in the Mac App Store

opera mac app store
Opera made waves when it successfully launched its Opera Mini browser for the iPhone. Now company has made its way into Apple's Mac App Store, which makes Opera 11.01 the first Web browser in the Mac App Store that isn't built around Safari's Webkit core.

Its description in the store is fairly tame, trumpeting Opera's speed and security along with gesture support and its trademark speed dial page. There's no mention of extension support or the built-in email client, though both are shown in the screenshots.

Something else which isn't called out is the fact that Opera can also download torrents -- and that's not something Apple has ever looked too kindly upon. Opera's BitTorrent support is rarely discussed, and it isn't depicted in the App Store description or images, either. Still, with built-in support for a technology that Apple has historically linked to illegal use, it will be interesting to see just how long Opera is welcome to stay at Apple's party.

Evernote for iOS completely overhauled, now faster and easier to use

Evernote 4 for iOS, massive UI overhaulEvernote for iPhone, which is almost two and a half years old, has been completely overhauled. The new version, Evernote 4 for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, is free, and available from the App Store.

In the blog post launching the new version, Evernote says that the new version is based on its findings from the last two and a half years. "[...] Users want faster access, easier note creation, better browsing and more ways to find what they're looking for" -- and, with Evernote 4, that's exactly what you get.

The New Note screen now looks completely different, and now features much easier access to every kind of notetaking functionality (audio recording, camera snapshot, etc.) Browsing by notebooks and tags has been made significantly easier, too.

As always, it's better to just download the new version and try it out. Or, if you prefer, watch the video after the break, or even flick through the gallery below.
